DIY lash extensions have become incredibly popular in the last few years. With the rise of DIY beauty routines, more women are learning that they can do their nails at home, incredible skin treatments, and yes, even at-home lash extensions. The options for keeping up with our favorite treatments at a more affordable cost is amazing, but do the services last?
We often get asked how long do DIY lashes last, and when we respond that the TAD lash system is designed to last up to 7 days, our next question is can you get DIY lash extensions wet? We are here to tell you OF COURSE! We don’t expect you to not shower for a week, right, ladies? In today’s blog we are going to go over details on why the TAD lash system is not only designed to be cleaned, but is absolutely safe to get wet!
Can You Get DIY Lash Extensions Wet?
When designing the TAD lash system, there were multiple things our CEO and founder, Michelle Nguyen, had on her “must-have” list. As a professional lash artist of 18+ years, Michelle knows about the importance of our natural lash health. You might be surprised to know keeping your lashes clean is a part of that. When she opted for 3D lashes as opposed to traditional PBT fiber, her mission was to create a lash cleanser that could pair with our unique material. Which all of this goes back to – the lashes needed to be able to be cleaned – resulting in wet lash extensions was a must.
Risks of Immediate Contact With Water Post-Application
The TAD lash adhesive, Brilliant Bond, is an incredible cyanoacrylate free and latex free adhesive. All professional lash adhesives have cyanoacrylate in them, which is the ingredient that makes the adhesive last up to six weeks. Fun fact – cyanoacrylate cures faster the higher your humidity, because moisture actually helps speed up adhesive dry time. Brilliant Bond does not work this way. It actually will not cure fully if exposed to water within the first 24 hours. This is why it’s extremely important to not get your TAD DIY lashes wet in the first 24 hours after application.
So, When Can You Get DIY Lash Extensions Wet?
When is it safe to have wet lash extensions? As mentioned above, after 24 hours, your lashes are safe to get wet. This includes showering, swimming, sauna, and of course, a lash bath! A common concern is, are DIY lashes safe? Rest assured, when you follow the instructions and use products designed for at-home use, DIY lashes are both safe and effective.
How to Protect DIY Lash Extensions From Water Damage
Whether you’re new to TAD lashes, or just new to DIY lash extensions in general, we’re here to help guide you through how to use our system and get comfortable with how to apply DIY lashes and even more comfortable with how to take care of DIY lashes.
Staying Dry During the First 24 Hours Post-Application
If you're wondering, can you get DIY lash extensions wet? The answer depends on how long they’ve had to cure. Ideally, you should avoid water exposure for the first 24 hours. We have covered above about the importance of allowing your Brilliant Bond adhesive time to fully cure and not get wet in the first 24 hours after application.
Types of Water to Watch Out For
Just because you’re now wearing DIY lashes does not mean you have to be specific about showers and swimming. Your lashes won’t be harmed by specific types of water.
What we do recommend is avoiding super cold or super hot water when doing your daily lash bath! Warm water is soothing and actually quite nice for your lash bath!
Rinsing Lashes Gently After Exposure to Harsh Water
Imagine you're caught in a rainstorm and wondering, "can you get DIY lash extensions wet?" Don't worry—just pat them dry gently afterward, and they'll be fine. All imagination aside, by harsh water, we mean salt water or natural water sources when swimming, or even sweat after a good workout! Wet eyelash extensions after any outdoor activity is a good excuse for a lash bath at the end of the day.
Drying Techniques to Preserve Lash Shape
When you have wet eyelash extensions after a lash bath or shower, the most important thing you can do is avoid touching them. Our flexible adhesive becomes stretchy when wet, and if you begin to tug on your wet lash extensions the lash segments will separate from your natural lashes.
We recommend allowing your DIY lashes to fully air dry. Because of TAD’s 3D Memory Flex Technology, your lashes will always bounce back into their original shape and curl, even after being wet!
We understand that you might have the urge to wipe or dry your wet lash extensions. If you must wipe water away, we encourage you to gently push a clean paper towel or lint free wipe under the bottom of the lashes. Just avoid wiping or tugging at the lash segments.
Best Practices for Lash Longevity in Humid Settings
Remember how we discussed that cyanoacrylate adhesives cure faster, the higher your humidity? Cyanoacrylate-free adhesive actually cures SLOWER the higher your humidity. If you live in a more humid climate, remember your adhesive might take up to 60 seconds to get tacky, and you might have to hold each segment against your natural lashes just a second or two longer to ensure the segment can grab hold of your natural lashes.
